Karin Berndl
Karin is crazy about flowers and plants - not so much their names, but their textures and close-up detail: the silky consistency of leaves, the evanescence of blossoms, the symmetry, the imperfections, the fragility, and the unbelievably wonderful colours. A sensitivity awakened by her mother, a very keen gardener, who filled their home with plants and blossoms.
Fortunately, photography allows Karin to capture the fleeting beauty of botanicals. Her work is printed on 100% cotton Hahnemühle paper using pigment based inks to create durable archival prints with exceptional quality. Some of the images she creates, however, aren’t just prints - in her mind, they belong on fabric instead.
Her late father spent much of his career traveling abroad and often brought home Hermès silk scarves as gifts for her mother, surrounding Karin from an early age with luxurious textiles rich in beautiful designs. As a child, these fabrics came to represent a sense of quality that felt almost out of reach.
Now, inspired by botany and her Sogetsu Ikebana studies, the delicate textures of flowers, combined with the richness of 18-momme silk twill, become an interplay of memory, nature and craftsmanship.
